Building Our Community DVD

This DVD is live footage of the children and teachers in Collingwood Primary School in Hull. It explains how ‘circles’ using restorative practice can make the children calmer and more responsive. It boosts their self-esteem and good feelings, and encourages the children to care about each other, resulting in a reduction in arguing and fighting in the school. ‘Circles’ demonstrated take place as follows:
• 8.30am the teachers start the day with a ‘circle’ in which they can discuss their problems and issues
• 9am the teachers set up a ‘circle’ with the children
• Break-time the elder children run their own ‘circle’
• Some children even take the ‘circle’ idea home.

The interviews on the DVD illustrate how teachers, parents and children all benefit from the self-knowledge and empowerment that has evolved during the restorative journey.
