The simplicity of approach in terms of content, presentation, language and structure of this engaging card-based resource enables practitioners, regardless of experience, to deliver a highly effective restorative programme. Children and young people are offered a developmentally appropriate resource that respects, reflects and accommodates individual learning styles.
Available for both 8-13 and 12-17 year olds, Kids-Talk! and Teen-Talk! Restorative Justice each feature two sets of 40 cards, divided into a further four sets that reflect the recognised and established stages of the restorative process:
• What happened?
• How did you feel?
• Who has been affected?
• What could happen now to make things better?
The process starts when a child or young person selects a relevant ‘What happened?’ card (e.g. theft), then a ‘How did you feel?’ card (e.g. angry, scared), then a ‘Who has been affected?’ card (e.g. my parents/carers), before finally selecting a ‘What could happen now to make things better?’ card (e.g. he/she could change his/her behaviour). One open-ended card for each stage makes dialogue practically limitless and the two colour-coded sets enable both the 'wronged' and 'wrongdoer' to take part. The children or young people are expected to talk through each of the four stages of this process with a facilitator until the restorative process is fulfilled satisfactorily.
Kids-Talk! and Teen-Talk! Restorative Justice uses exciting graphics and bold text to create a visually stimulating resource that offers a degree of physical involvement and interactivity to support visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners. The imagery and text used reflects the age group and it is an ideal tool for facilitator led restorative sessions that impact on the emotional well-being, behaviour, learning and safety of young people.
