Resolving Conflict DVD

This DVD contains a series of real-life case studies in which people speak out about violence and aggression, seeking compromise and re-establishing relationships. It enables students to see, first hand, situations where conflict has occurred and to examine the causes and consequences of violent behaviour. The DVD looks at nine scenarios:
• Road-rage - A taxi driver and a cyclist describe a violent confrontation and how te aftermath has blighted their lives
• Bullying at school - Young people describe being bullied and how it has plagued them. Students show how to tackle bullying and aggression through peer counselling
• Mediating disputes - Student mediators and students who have been through mediation explain how antagonism and violence in school can be reduced
• Criminal conflict - A mother and the youth responsible for her son's death describe the effect of a restorative meeting
• Domestic violence - A young man with a history of violence addresses his behaviour and says what motivated him and what he is doing to remedy it
• Up against the law - Racial conflict between the black community and the police has become the focus of atention since the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry: individual victims and the police speak out on institutional racism and the impact of an apology
• Conflict and change - Powerful images show individuals and groups taking direct non-violent action on GM food, the environment and nuclear weapons
• Making peace: Northern Ireland - The community has been shattered by war. Young people are demanding change. In their daily lives and in their relationships, they are shaping a future without violence, while respecting differences
• After apartheid: South Africa - The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was set up to bring a deeply divided people together. A police officer convicted of crimes under apartheid is given the chance to meet the ralatives of his victims in return for amnesty and freedom.

An included 57-page printable workbook with activities, designed by mediators and specialists in conflict resolution, develops the issues raised in the DVD units.
