This resource tackles the issue of raising boys’ achievement, helping schools to prepare their boys for the kind of peer pressure that is so commonly encountered when they move on to secondary school and which can have a detrimental effect on learning. Sprout is a great way of helping Year 6 and 7 teachers’ and pupils’ explore the issue of boys' underachievement.

Sprout follows the story of Kevin. Dez on one side, Chris on the other. Dez laughs at him if he tries too hard and Chris can’t try hard enough. Who should Kevin listen to? The video based exercises will help children to:

• Decide what are attractive/unattractive characteristics
• Identify what to look for in a friend
• Look at choices and decide what they would do
• Think about the future – where they want to get to and what they have to do to get there
• Explore preconceptions of secondary school and debunk the myths
• Identify strategies for coping with transition
• Assess strategies for doing well at school
• Provide ideas for creative work, focusing on achievement and the anti-swot culture.
